The e-ID Act was passed by Parliament on 20 December 2024, subject to a possible referendum, thereby establishing that the federal government will introduce the state-recognised electronic identity document (e-ID). Alongside this, the federal government will establish the trust infrastructure essential for operation of the e-ID. This infrastructure will also be accessible to cantonal and communal authorities, as well as private individuals, for issuing additional electronic identity credentials. The e-ID Act will not come into force until the third quarter of 2026 at the earliest. By this time, the trust infrastructure will also be operational.

Gathering experience and suggestions for improvement

In preparation for introducing the e-ID and its necessary trust infrastructure, the federal government has already implemented several pilot projects (e.g. the electronic learner's licence in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden). Now the general public is also being given the chance to gain first-hand experience. The test environment available today ('public beta') enables individuals and public authorities to issue and verify electronic proof of identity.

Test environment works with fictitious proof of identity

Those wishing to use the test environment and its services must download the 'swiyu' app to their smartphone, after which they can obtain a fictitious proof of identity (beta ID). The test environment will continue to evolve and expand its service offerings until the official launch of the e-ID and trust infrastructure. All products will be released as open-source software and will be freely available to the general public, businesses and authorities. The government encourages the public to share their experiences and offer suggestions for improvement.
