Federal Council sets out strategic direction for the Geneva AI Summit 2027 and appoints Fabiola Gianotti as Delegate
Berne, 12.08.2026 — At its meeting on 12 August, the Federal Council set out the strategic direction and project organisation for the Geneva AI Summit 2027. It appointed Fabiola Gianotti as its Delegate. The former Director-General of CERN is tasked with implementing the defined objectives.
The Federal Council is delighted that Switzerland will be hosting the Geneva AI Summit 2027. This high-level international summit brings together governments, international organisations, the academic and business communities, and civil society. The event is to be held on the theme of ‘Bridging Innovation and Trust’ with the focus set on two strategic priorities: AI as a driver of prosperity and progress for all and fostering trustworthy, responsible and safe use of AI. The aim is to develop partnerships, initiatives and joint approaches that will have a lasting impact beyond the summit.
The Geneva AI Summit offers Switzerland the opportunity to bring together its scientific, economic and diplomatic strengths and to play an active role in shaping the international debate on artificial intelligence. The Federal Council is delighted to have secured Fabiola Gianotti, an exceptionally experienced and internationally recognised figure, for the Geneva AI Summit 2027.
International leadership and academic experience
Fabiola Gianotti was Director-General of CERN from 2016 to 2025. As the first woman to head the organisation and the first person to serve two full terms, she has extensive experience in leading a complex international scientific institution and has an outstanding international network. She has lived in Geneva for over twenty years and has close ties to the Swiss science and innovation community. As Delegate, Fabiola Gianotti will help shape the strategic positioning of the summit and its practical focus, mobilise high-level national and international stakeholders, and provide impetus for potential initiatives and outcomes of the summit.
Joint preparations within the Federal Administration
Preparatory work is being carried out under the lead of DETEC, in close cooperation with the FDFA, the EAER and other federal agencies involved. Overall coordination rests with the Federal Council Delegate.
The cost of the main event is currently estimated to be around CHF 6 million. With regard to sponsorship, financial contributions will not influence the summit's strategic direction, official agenda or political outcomes.
