Sustaining Peace, Conflict Prevention and Transformation

No development without peace. Conflicts and violence slow down or reverse development achievements. They adversely affect the lives and dignity of millions of people and drive most of the humanitarian needs worldwide: individuals are displaced, families separated, livelihoods are devastated and opportunities for broader growth, development and prosperity are destroyed.

The quality of our lives depends not on whether or not we have conflicts, but on how we respond to them.
Thomas Crum (1998), “The Magic of Conflict", Simon & Schuster

Since 2003 the SDC supports activities that strengthen structures to prevent and transform violent conflicts. Sustaining peace addresses the structural causes and drivers of conflicts through sectorial approaches but also by supporting local actors to initiate local dialogue processes and activities to increase social cohesion, for example through cultural initiatives.
